Tutorials

In this tutorial I will show you just how easy it is to create pr-material for multi-million-dollar companies.

More specifically, I will show you how to create YouSee’s new logo in Photoshop:

Step 1.

We start out by making the text. I couldn’t find the font they used, so I had to find the one that came closest and modify it a bit. The one I found is called ‘Hiragino Kaku Gothic Standard’.

First create a new 150×150 transparent image.

then write a small ‘y’ in 97pt size. Rasterize the letter, and select the little part at the end as such:

press delete.
Then create a new 511×192 white image, and copy the modified ‘y’ over there as such:

Then clear out the 150×150 image and write an ‘o’. Make it 82pt and 90% wide. Furthermore give it a 2px black outside stroke, to make it look fatter, as such:

copy it over to the ‘y’ and the other image.

Next letter is the ‘u’. Unfortunately I couldn’t think of anything to make the ‘u’ look right, since it’s got too many odd details, so I left it the way it was. Make it 82pt and copy it over to the others.

Next letter is an ‘S’. Make it capital 86pt, and 110% wide. Then copy it over with the others.

The ‘e’ is easy - make it 82pt, and rasterize it. Then select this area:

..and press delete. You will end up with this result:

Finally create the ‘registered’ logo in 35pt as such:

Now that you have all the letters copied over to the 511×192px image, it should look something like this:

We’re getting there, but still need to make it perfect. Look at the original image, and see how well you can make it fit. I rotated some of the letters, and made them smaller or larger, and it came out like this:

Step 2.

Now for the tricky part, or.. so you should think. It’s actually quite easy. Create a new 511×511px white image. Then start placing coloured squares on it like this:

When you’re done it should look something like this:

Then merge all the squares into 1 layer, and give it a ‘Motion blur’ filter at 90 degrees. After you’ve done that, it might look a bit bright, but as we want to keep the colors, we just duplicate the layer twice, and end up with this:

Almost there. Now merge the 3 layers into 1, and give it a ‘Gaussian blur’ filter of a couple of pixels:

Now make a transparent circle shape in the correct size:

Go to ‘path’ -> ‘Make selection’ -> 0px, with AA enabled. Press ctrl+shift+c and create a new 511x(whatever it says already) white image, and paste it there, as such:

Give it an inner shadow blending option like this:

to make it look like this:

Then give it a 6px grey stroke like this:

Merge the layer down, and select the right grey area with the magic wand, as such:
(Make sure AA is enabled)

Go to ‘edit’ -> ‘fill’ -> ‘ white’, to make it look like this:

Go to canvas size, and reduce the height to 192px, to make it look like this:

Now drag the text from the old image, to this image, like this:

Give the text-layer a white outer glow blending option, and finally find a suitable font for the smaller text beneath. The final result looks like this:

Compared to the original:
