Sometimes reading black on white concentrated for hours makes your eyes hurt. Yet for some reason pretty much every code-editor, I’ve ever used, had black on white as the default setting?.. Well lately I’ve been doing a lot of Java-coding (school stuff), and have been introduced to yet another black on white coding-environment – Eclipse.

So while I was stuck on some code, I figured what better way to procrastinate than to change the theme to white on black, right? And so I dug around, soon realising that changing the theme in Eclipse is not for the faint-hearted. I did it though, and it looks awesome! Luckily it’s possible to copy a couple of well-hidden files from deep within Eclipse, and so I figured I’d share mine, so you can enjoy this theme as well:

Guide for OS X (I’m guessing it’s not that different in Windows or Linux):

The files, you’re looking for are hidden, so the easiest way to access them is through the terminal with a command similar to this:

open /Users/[insert user]/Documents/workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.runtime/.settings

This is where mine are, but your settings are probably different, so change it accordingly.

If you did the above correctly, you should see a Finder-window with a bunch of files all starting with “org.eclipse”.

Replace 2 of these with the files from this zip and restart Eclipse – this should change your theme :)

If you’re anything like me, you probably often get frustrated by OS X’s method of maximizing windows. The main issue is the green ‘+’ button, which has different functions depending on the specific window, but never changes it’s appearance to show so. This makes it a useless button and prevents users from maximizing unless they do it manually.

Windows however has always delt with maximizing in the same way and in Windows 7, they even added the ability to move the windows and either maximize them or fill half of the screen, depending on the movement. They call this extremely useful feature ‘Snap’, and it’s the only thing I’ve ever wished copied to OS X.

Thankfully this is now possible with the little application ‘Cinch’ http://irradiatedsoftware.com/cinch/

Cinch adds the exact functionality of ‘Snap’ to OS X – nothing more, nothing less.

Having been using Apple’s Safari on both OS X and Windows for several years now, transitioning to a new one is a big leap for me.

But I was getting tired of a few things.. Mainly the inability to sync bookmarks between platforms. This is 2010 for christ’s sake! There has also been minor bugs in safari since the introduction of extensions – bugs that doesn’t seem to be fixed, leaving me somewhat disappointed. But don’t get me wrong, Safari has offered a ton of good stuff to the web and I don’t see myself ever using anything but WebKit. The developer tools are the best in the world!

Anywho, as any good web-developer, I’ve also been watching on the sideline as Google has tried their luck in the browser-war with Chrome. It started out more or less as a safari-copy, but it has grown with time, and I believe it’s ready for use now. Chrome offers everything safari did, but with the additions I mentioned above, making it worth the transition. Now I just need an iPhone-version to make the circle complete :)

P.S. Someone tell them to come up with a better icon.. god it’s ugly!
